Designer(s): Zero Match Type: MM (for 5 players)
Featured in: Zero's Guardians

MainMatch 9: Runes to Ruins

As you stare down into the pit you can see the 36 Runes in front of you.

Each Rune falls into 2 different orders, the Divine Order and the Mundane Order.

These Orders contain 6 different groups each, such that every Rune falls into 2 different groups.

Divine Order: Divider Slope Splitter Zig-Zag Enclosure Box

Mundane Order: Straight Torn Origin Cross Angled Slash

During Round 1, you must choose 6 different Runes and create a personal symbol.

You will want to keep the Runes that use to make your personal symbol hidden.

To create a personal symbol you must follow the following rules:

• Choose 6 Runes that do not share a group in the Divine Order or...

Choose 6 Runes that do not share a group in the Mundane Order.

(This is equivalent to don’t share a Column, or don’t share a Row)

• For the remaining Order, you must choose at most 3 runes that belong to the same group.

• Arrange your 6 Runes in a 2 high and 3 wide grid. Runes may not be rotated.

• Every Rune must connect together via their lines.

• You may not submit the same Personal Symbol as another player.

Doing so will result in everyone re-submitting and that combination becoming invalid.

For the rest of the game, you will aim to identify every other players personal symbol while keeping your secret.

To do this you must identify all 6 Runes and their locations within the grid.

When a player has had their personal symbol correctly guessed they are considered to be Discovered.

The first player to be Discovered will become the elimination candidate.

The last player who remains Undiscovered will receive 2 tokens of life.

===================================================================

This game uses 2 currencies called “Insight” and “Mantra”.

Insight can be spent at Vision Insight to learn or protect information about other players Runes and Personal Symbols.

Mantra is a penalty received for using Learned Insights to check information you think you already know.

Every player is given 6 insight at the start of Round 2, more is gained each round as outlined in Shared Insight.

===================================================================

Shared Insight

At the start of the MainMatch, 15 possible conditions will be revealed.

Starting Round 3, players will earn insight based on 1 of these conditions each round.

Every round, players will cast 1 vote for a condition.

Players may spend 1 insight to gain 3 additional votes.

Votes do not carry between rounds.

Votes casts on conditions used in previous rounds will are voided and do not count.

Once 12 of the 15 conditions are used, they all become available again.

The condition with the most votes will be used to allocate insight.

If there is a tie for conditions, the lower numbered condition will be used.

How much insight each player earns is revealed publicly.

Which condition wins the vote is not revealed publicly.

However, players may spend 1 insight during the voting period to be told which condition won after the vote.

You may choose to abstain from voting.

If you abstain, it will be announced alongside the insight distribution.

Your ranked position will be revealed, but your total insight earnt will remain hidden.

For tied positions you will either be above or below everyone who earned the same as you, at random.

You may not abstain 2 rounds in a row.

For conditions where players are ranked, the highest ranked player earns 6 Insight.

The next highest earns 5, then 4, then 3, then 2.

If there are ties, players both earn the same insight and the next highest only earns 1 less insight.

After every 3 conditions have passed, players will gain a flat +1 insight earned per round.

(Round 5, Round 8, Round 11 etc)

===================================================================

Vision Insight

There are multiple ways to spend insight to get direct information.

Each of the following powers may only be used once per player per round.

For each Vision, If you are the only player to use one of the Vision Insights, you gain 1 Insight.

• Spend 1 Insight, assign 4 different Runes to the other 4 Players

You will learn if each of the players used the assigned Rune in their Personal Symbol

• Spend 1 Insight, name a Divine Group.

You will learn which players used a Rune from that Group in their Personal symbol

• Spend 1 Insight, name a Mundane Group

You will learn which players used a Rune from that Group in their Personal symbol

• Spend 1 Insight

For this Round, the previous 3 Vision Insight questions will give the inverse response when questioning you.

This costs 1 Insight more for you to use after each use.

• Spend 2 Insight, assign a Group to each of the 6 positions of the Personal Symbol. Name up to 4 players.

You will learn how many of those players included a Rune of that Group in that Location.

• Spend 2 Insight, name an Order and a location on the Personal Symbol.

You are told which Groups of that Order were used by any of the players in that location, but not the frequency.

• Spend 3 Insight, name a Player and up to 5 Runes

You are told a random Rune in their Personal Symbol that you didn’t name.

• Publicly Reveal a Rune in your Personal Symbol, name a Player

Every time they target you this round, you will learn the same information they questioned for your Personal Symbol.

• Publicly Reveal a Rune in your Personal Symbol and its location, name a Player

Learn which Rune they have placed in the same location on their Personal Symbol

Cannot be used if you have been Discovered. Each player may only use this once.

===================================================================

Learned Insight

Once you have suspicions about a players Runes and Personal Symbol, you can risk gaining Mantra to confirm information.

You may perform each of the following actions up to 6 times each Round but may not perform more actions than double current round number.

Every time you meet a failure condition you will gain Mantra. You will lose any remaining Insight you have based on the total Mantra obtained.

Mantra acts as a debt. If you do not have enough Insight to pay off the debt, the Mantra will carry over to the next round.

While in debt, you must use 1 Insight for every 20 Mantra you have to decrease your debt.

If you have at least 10 Mantra at the end of the MainMatch, you will be ineligible to receive a Token of Life.

If the MM winner is made ineligible, just 1 Token of Life will be given to the next most recent player to have their Personal Symbol guessed.

• Name a Rune

You are told how many players used the Rune in their Personal Symbol

Gain 2 Mantra for each player that used the Rune

• Name a Player, a Group and a Number

You are told how many Runes from that Group the player used in their Personal Symbol

Gain 3 Mantra multiplied by the difference between your Guess and the Truth

• Name a Player and a Rune

You are told if the player used the Rune in their Personal symbol

Gain 4 Mantra if they did not use the Rune

• Name a Rune and a Row or Column for the Personal Symbol

You are told how many other players used the Rune in that Row or Column in their Personal Symbols

Gain 5 Mantra if no player used that Rune in that Row or Column in their Personal Symbol

• Name 2 Players

You are told how many Runes are shared between their Personal Symbols

Gain 6 Mantra if they do not share a Rune

• Name up to 6 Runes

You are told the greatest number of these Runes that appear in a single player’s Personal Symbol

Gain 3 Mantra for each Rune you named that didn’t appear in that persons Personal Symbol.

You will not spend Insight to remove only some Mantra

Some examples:

If you had 3 Insight and 17 Mantra:

17 – 6 = 11 (free) 11 – 7 = 4 (1 Insight)

Leaving you at 2 Insight and 4 Mantra carried to the next Round.

If you had 0 Insight and 17 Mantra:

17 – 6 = 11 (free)

Leaving you at 0 Insight and 11 Mantra carried to the next Round.

If you had 6 Insight and 100 Mantra:

100 – 6 = 94 (free) 94 – 7 = 87 (1 Insight) 87 – 8 = 79 (1 Insight) 79 – 9 = 70 (1 Insight) 70 – 10 = 60 (1 Insight) 60 – 20 = 40 (1 Insight) 40 – Remaining = 0 (1 Insight)

Leaving you at 0 Insight and 0 Mantra carried to the next Round.

===================================================================

Symbol Insight

Each round you may submit 1 guess for Personal Symbols

You may pay Insight to gain an additional Guesses, with the cost increasing by 1 each time this is used.

You will then Allocate 6 Runes to the 2x3 Grid.

This will then be compared against the Personal Symbols for 4 remaining players.

You will receive information based on which Personal Symbol you matched closest too.

A symbol is closest by rating with the following 3 criteria. Getting any hit in the stronger category takes priority.

Correct Rune in Correct Location >> Correct Rune in Wrong Location >> Wrong Rune in Location, but matching Group

Afterwards you privately will be told the number of times each of these occurred for this Personal Symbol.

You will not be told whose Personal Symbol you are matching to.

In the case of a perfect match, that player is publicly announced to having been discovered.

If it was a single player who managed to correctly complete this match they will gain 10 Insight.

If it was multiple players, they will each gain 5 Insight instead.

Discovered players may continue to play the MainMatch as they see fit.

===================================================================

Results

The MainMatch ends when 1 or fewer players remain Undiscovered

The first player to be Discovered is the loser and will become the elimination candidate.

The last player who remains Undiscovered will receive 2 tokens of life.

In the event a tie due to simultaneous Discovers, players are ranked in the following way.

Guesses against your Personal Symbol are reviewed.

We look at each players best Guess for the count of "Correct Runs in the Correct Location" for your Personal Symbol.

Whoever has the lowest number when summing all these is ranked higher. If there is a tie, this is repeated with:

"Correct Rune in Wrong Location" (in any Previous guess) then "Wrong Rune in Location, but matching Group" (in any Previous guess)

If this is again a tie, then Least Mantra Obtained through the MainMatch is ranked higher

===================================================================

Power of Dark: Choose a Player, that Player gains 5 Mantra for every 5 Mantra they have at the end of the Round, with a minimum of 10.

This has no effect if it is used in the last round of the game.

  14. Players are ranked by Personal Symbols with the most intersections with 4 right angles
  15. Players are ranked by Personal Symbols with the largest number of lines meeting at 1 intersection

Clarification: A "Line Segment" is defined as line that with 1 of the 4 "squares" that can make up a Rune.

Straight Divider and Slash Divider are both 2 Line Segments

Angled Slope and Straight Zig Zag are both 4 Line Segments

A "Straight Line" is defined as the full point to point line.

Straight Divider and Slash Divider are both 1 Straight Line

Angled Slope has 2 Straight Lines, whereas Straight Zig Zag has 3 Straight Lines.

For "7. connected together via shared groups", it means used Runes that have at least 1 other used Rune in a row or column are connected, then those runes count.
