Swapping Black & White

In this Death Match, play and swap tiles to beat your opponent's tile.

Designer(s): Zero Match Type: DM (for 2 players)
Featured in: Zero's Gambit

Players aim to play tiles with a larger number than their opponent matching tile, but players have the opportunity to swap their tiles in order to get a better match up.

This game is played with 9 tiles numbered from 0 to 8. The even numbers are coloured black, and the odd numbers are coloured white.

The game consists of 2 phases, the play phase, and the swap phase.

Play phase:

Both players play 3 numbers from their pool of tiles in the first 3 positions privately. The numbers are compared in each position, and the player with the larger number scores a "point". In the case of a tie, neither player scores a point. The current score is then announced. Players repeat the process for the next 3 positions, and the score is revealed again. Players then play their last 3 tiles, and the score is revealed again. Then we move to the swap phase.

Points in the play phase don't determine who wins, just provide info

Swap Phase:

Each player privately names 2 tiles to swap in their confessional. One number must be a black tile, and the other must be a white tile. Once both players have swapped a tile, they choose in their confessional a tile to reveal privately. Both tiles are then publicly revealed and players choose 2 tiles to swap again.

Players can not swap a revealed tile. They must swap 2 tiles if they can, (if they have at least 1 black and 1 white tile unrevealed). If they only have 1 colour of tile unrevealed, they cannot swap (and so pass the swap phase). Once all tiles are revealed, the player with more points in the new matchups wins.

In the case of a tie, the game will be replayed. If there are 3 ties in a row, the DMO will be declared the winner of the DM, and the EC will be eliminated.

There is a time limit of 3 minutes for actions in the play phase, and 2 minutes in the swap phase. There is 5 minutes reserve time.

If a player runs out of reserve time, they lose the DM
