Hive Mind

In this Main Match, attempt to score from the hexes at the same as you try to identify their values by placing in shapes.

Designer(s): Zero Match Type: MM (for 5 players)
Featured in: Zero's Gauntlet, The Genius: Tempo Up, Genius Recharged

In this game, players must identify the value of each hexes on a board, then attempt to score without colliding with other players.

The hexes are labelled A-L to form a Hive.

The game is played with 2 Hives, with each Hive having 3 rounds.

There are 3 shapes, known as Tri (Blue), Arc (Green), Line (Orange).

On each Hive you must use each shape once.

Under each Hex is a secret amount of points, of value 1,2 or 3. Five will be worth 1 points, Four will be worth 2 points. Three will be worth 3 points.

These points will be placed randomly, with the only condition that the three hexes worth 3 points are not all adjacent. eg ABC isnt allowed, but ABL is

In each round, you will select 3 connected hexes that form one of the 3 shapes. Remember on a Hive you must use each shape once.

The first round of a Hive is non-scoring. The remaining 2 rounds are scoring rounds.

When you play a shape, you will learn information about values of some of the hexes, depending on the shape you play.

Tri: Total Score of all surrounding hexes of the Triangle .eg, ADE looks at BFHI.

Arc: Total Score from inner Arc to edge. eg, HKL looks at CFI. and EIJ looks at FC.

Line: Total Score of hexes adjacent to a Line end on the border that are on the border. eg, CFI looks at BG.

It will be announced how many of each shape were used, and the number of shapes that are at each hex.

It will not be announced who owns which shape or where exactly they were.

These hints are based on the initial values of each hex, not their current values.

Scoring:

During the scoring rounds, in addition to gaining a hint, your shape also scores.

All hexes that are overlapped an odd number of times score the hexes points for players who have shapes over those hexes.

All hexes that are overlapped an even number do not score points.

Once a Hex has been scored, it cannot be scored again for that Hive. The number is removed, and the Hex is worth 0.

During your last round of each Hive, you may submit a guess for the total points on each Hex. You score 1 point if you place all 1’s correctly, 1 point for all 2’s and 1 point for all 3’s.

Nobody will be told their total points until the end of the game.

Garnet Spending:

You may spend 5 Garnets during round 2 of a Hive to perform this action. In round 3 of the Hive, all hexes where you alone gain the points, you gain double the amount. People who bought this are publicly announced at the start of round 3.

You may spend 3 Garnets during round 2 of a Hive to perform this action. In round 3 of that Hive, you gain 1 point for every time you block another person who bought the 5 garnet condition from scoring on a hex (max of 1 per hex). People who bought this are announced publicly at the end of round 3.

You may purchase both of these at the same time.

End Game

After the 2 Hives, there will be a 24 hour period to effect the result, via guessing the hidden information.

You will have a 24 hour chance to guess the scores of each of the other players.

For every correct guess you gain 1 point, and the player you correctly guessed loses 2 points.

It is not revealed how many points you guessed each player to have.

You will be told privately the number of times you guessed correctly, and the number of times you were correctly guessed by other people. (Remember you may guess for all 4 other players)

Results

At the end of the game, the player with the most points earns a ToL.

If multiple people are tied for most points, whoever scored more on 3’s wins.

If then multiple people are tied for most points, whoever scored more on 2’s wins.

If people are still tied, no ToL is given for this win condition.

Also at the end of the game, the player who has the highest total count of doing the following things earns a ToL.

• Placed your 3 shapes on the Hive such that none overlapped with eachother. (max2)

• Placed a shape on a Hive that didn’t overlap with any other shape for the round. (max6)

• Placed a shape that was only on hexes worth 2 points. (max6)

• Avoided placing a shape on a hex that all 4 other players placed a shape on for the round. (max6)

If multiple people are tied for highest total count, whoever scored less on 3’s wins.

If then multiple people are tied for most points, whoever scored less on 2’s wins.

If people are still tied, no ToL is given for this win condition.

Only after both of these conditions have been checked, is the MM loser decided.

The player with the least points without a ToL is the EC.

Earning Garnets:

Players Earn 1 Garnet for every 5 points they have at the end of the MainMatch

MM9: Hive Mind - originally designed by @Zero

SUMMARY

Figure out the values of the hives — then score using them while tactically avoiding collisions!

GAMEPLAY

This game lasts for 3 rounds, and is played on 3 hexagonal grids called Hives. The hexes are labeled from A-L to form each Hive.

This game also uses 3 different shapes:

  • Tri (Blue)
  • Arc (Green)
  • Line (Orange)

Throughout this game, you must use each shape once on each Hive.

HIVES

Under each hex of a Hive is a secret amount of points, with potential values of 1, 2, or 3. Five hexes will be worth 1 points, four hexes will be worth 2 points, and three hexes on each hive will be worth 3 points.

These points will be placed randomly, with the only condition being that the three hexes worth 3 points are not all connected adjacently. For example, ABC all being 3 points would not be allowed, but ABL is possible.

In each round, you will select 3 connected hexes that form one of the 3 shapes for each Hive.

Remember that on each individual Hive you must use each shape once.

Additionally, for Round 1 you must place each of the 3 shapes exactly once. For Rounds 2 and 3, you may place multiple of the same shape.

The first round is a non-scoring round. The remaining 2 rounds are scoring rounds. During all three rounds, you will earn information about the Hives through your shapes.

Each shape looks at other hexes. When you play a shape onto a Hive, you will learn information about the starting values of the hexes your shape is looking at.

  • The Tri looks at all surrounding hexes of the triangle and reports the total sum. For example, ADE looks at BFHI.
  • The Arc looks at all hexes from the inner arc to the edge and reports the total sum. For example, HKL looks at CFI. and EIJ looks at FC.
  • The Line looks at all hexes adjacent to hexes at the end of the Line that are on the border, that they themselves are also on the border. For example, CFI looks at BG, and HIJ looks at DGKL.

Only two things will be announced at the end of each round:

  • How many of each shape were used for each Hive.
  • The number of total shapes that are at each hex.

It will not be announced who owns which shape or how exactly they were placed.

SCORING

During the scoring rounds of Rounds 2 and 3, in addition to learning information about the hexes you look at, you will also earn points through your shape.

All hexes that are overlapped an odd number of times by shapes will score that hex's points for the player(s) who placed those shapes on that hex.

All hexes that are overlapped an even number do not score points.

⚠️ Once a Hex has been scored, it cannot be scored again for that Hive. The points are removed, and the Hex is worth 0 for scoring purposes for the rest of the game.

In addition, there is an additional opportunity to score in Round 3. During that round, you may submit a guess for the values of each hex for each Hive at the start of the game. You score 1 point if you place all 1’s correctly, 1 point if you place all 2’s correctly, and 1 point if you place all 3’ correctly. These points are also given out per Hive, meaning you may earn a bonus 9 points from guessing.

Nobody will be told their total points until the end of the game.

SPECIAL ABILITIES

To spice things up, players will have access to two one-time special abilities throughout this game: Double and Block.

Double

You may use a Double on a Hive of your choice during Round 2.

Then, during Round 3, all hexes on that Hive that you score alone with will give you double the points.

Block

You may use a Block on a Hive of your choice during Round 2.

Then, during Round 3, you will gain 1 point for every hex you block another player who used a Double on this Hive from scoring with.

Each player's chosen Hive for the Double ability will be publicly announced at the end of Round 2.

In contrast, each player's chosen Hive for the Block ability will not be announced until the end of the game.

RESULTS

At the end of the game, the player with the most points earns 2 Tokens of Life.

If multiple people are tied for most points, whoever scored more on 3’s wins. If then multiple people are still tied, whoever scored more on 2’s wins. If it is still tied, the player who got the most points from correct hex guesses wins. If it is STILL tied, no Tokens of Life are given out.

The player with the least points is the Elimination Candidate. If multiple people are tied for least points, whoever scored less on 3’s loses. If then multiple people are still tied, whoever scored less on 2’s loses. If it is STILL tied, then the winner of the Main Match will break the tie.

Players will also earn a garnet for every 5 points they score.

Clarification: Additionally, for Round 1 you must place each of the 3 shapes exactly once across Hives. That is, you submit 3 shapes (1 for each Hive), and these shapes must be all distinct. Once again, this is only true for Round 1.

Amendment: To make submissions easier, I'm giving the three Hives in this game names without permission from my co-hosts. The three Hives in this game will now be named: Charge, Marcer, and Zero.
