Rubberbanding

Summary: In this Main Match, aim to stay on a shrinking platform without rubberbanding off the side.

Designer(s): RedsToad

Featured in: Master Of All Trades

Match Type: MM (for 12 players)

Rules:

In this game, players must aim to stay on a 30 long shrinking platform. The game will last over a maximum of 15 rounds, each lasting 24 hours.

Before the game all players will be divided into 6 pairs. Each member of a pair will be connected to their partner by a rubber band. Rubber bands will be coloured red, blue, green, yellow, orange and purple for easier tracking and trading.

Two people connected by a rubber band form a team and will win and lose together, however teams may change throughout the MM. Due to trading, a single person may be connected to multiple players or to none at all.

--

Afterwards, all players will be placed on a shrinking track, which starts out being 30 spaces long. One member of each team will be placed on space 15, the other member will start on space 16.

The goal of the game is to stay on the track for a long as possible. Game ends when there are 2 teams or less remaining on the track.

--

At the beginning of every round, the track is shown; it will have the position of every player, and who is connected by rubber bands.

Afterwards, each player gains a move card, which has a nonzero number from -10 to +10. If you hold this move card at the end of the round, you will move that many steps in that direction. All moves happen at the same time, so if you hold both +4 and -3, you will move one step right at the end of the round.

Move cards do not disappear between rounds.

For the first 10 rounds, each round's set of cards is generated so the average absolute value of the cards is the same as the round number. The set is given out at random to all players, including those who have fallen off (though they will not be able to receive them).

--

At the end of each round, rubberbanding happens, then movement, then another rubberbanding, then one space at the ends of the track is removed. At any time, if you are off of the track, you fall off and are out of the game. If you are ever connected to a player who falls off, you also fall off.

--

Rubberbanding happens between any two players that are not within 1 space of one another and are connected by a rubber band.

Two players connected by a rubber band with a distance N between one another will be pulled N/2 towards each other. All movement is resolved simultaneously, so a if a player is pulled 1 space left and 2 spaces right, the net movement is 1 space right. This process is repeated until every pair connected by a rubber band is on same or adjacent spaces

--

Players who fall off the track are eliminated. They will no longer participate in the MM.

Any players they are connected to will be pulled off and eliminated as well. Eliminated players will receive a Garbage Generator. Due to that, they will not be able to receive cards given out at the start of the round, but the restriction about the average value will include these cards.

--

As the track is constantly shortening, more and more teams will fall off the track.

If at the end of a round no more than 2 rubber bands remain on the track the MM ends and all players left on the track get a ToL each, plus one additional ToL to be given away.

The players who fell off by themselves (i.e. were not pulled off by another person) receive a ToD each and are at a risk of being in the DM. The winners decide the EC from the losers.

--

At the end of MM additional items will be distributed. There will be 12 items, some of them positive and some of them negative. When the items are revealed, it is said which are good and which are bad.

The order you fall off the track determines the order you pick the items. The earlier you fall, the later you choose and the more likely you are to get a bad item.

----------Edge Cases----------

  • If there are no players left on the track, everyone who fell off in the last round gets a ToL.
  • If that is everyone, the game is considered a tie. In this case Lexi (as the winner of MM1), Benji (as the winner of DM1), and whoever holds the Onyx will get a ToL each. They may choose the EC from any of the remaining players.
  • If rubberbanding never resolves by creating an endless loop, players will be rubberbanded only once from their initial state.

----------Tradable Items----------

  • Move cards. Those are referred to as “[Number] Move Card” or “[Number] MC”
  • End of a rubber band. Those are referred to as “[Colour] Rubber band end” or “[Colour] RBE”

--

Everyone's letter identity used for the rounds, along with who they are paired with and their starting location, will be released in 24 hours. Players will also be priavtly given their starting move card,

From then each round will last 24 hours.

Rule clarification: Movement due to rubberband is rounded down.

Distance between the players refers to the difference in value of spaces the players are on

Clarification: For ToD distribution, the only case where you avoid a ToD while off the track is getting pulled off by a player who off the track.

Falling off in any other way will give you a ToD at the end of the game.

@Contestant Rule change: Rubberbanding happens once. There will be no repeated rubberbanding until everyone is adjacent

As this has been done 8-ish hours in the r1, you may request a deadline extension in your submissions

forgot to mention for deadline extension: if less than half vote for it, the game will proceed as normal

@Contestant Due to a few complaints about the RNG in this game we have decided to change the card distribution system.

  • Move cards are no longer limited between -10 and 10. They may be any whole number that satisfies the restrictions of deck making.
  • Cards that are given out are predetermined for all future rounds, but generated randomly.

Move Cards restrictions:

In round X, the average of all absolute values equals X (old)

In round X, the absolute value of any card is between X-2 and X+2 (inclusive)

In rounds 10 and 15, the sum of all move cards given out to a player up to that round will be equal some unknown number. This number is the same for every player

These rules come into effect now and will affect the rest of the game

Edit: reworded the 3rd condition

Edit: reworded the 3rd condition again

Clarification: predetermined means that all cards are prepared beforehand. The cards are still generated randomly to fit the criteria above. I will be able to give the python code that was used to generate the numbers after the MM
