Death Match 4A: Progressive Chess
In this game of chess, you all start out with the same basic pieces. Use currency that is gained throughout the game to upgrade your pieces and choose different paths for them.
The board is 7 by 7, and each player starts with six pawns and a king on their back row, with the king in the center, as shown below.

The DMO will decide who goes first, with play alternating for each turn afterwards. For your turn, each player will perform two actions in this order:
1) Move
2) Upgrade
Each player has 2 minutes for each of these steps, and 5 minutes of reserve time. Time starts when I post the board. Post your moves in #dm4-arena.
1) Move:
Move one piece that you control according to its movement rules. The rules for each piece will be posted below.
2) Upgrade:
Upgrade a piece according to the upgrade tree. A piece may only be upgraded to a piece that is directly above it in the tree. Upgrades cost 1 point for the first time you upgrade a piece, 2 points for the second time, and 3 points for the third time.
Both players start out with 1 point of currency. Players earn one point of currency at the start of their turn, and two points of currency when they capture an opponent's piece.
The player who checkmates their opponent is the winner. In the case of a draw, one additional match will be played. If this additional match is also a draw, then the DMO will win.
Pieces
The upgrade tree for pieces is shown below.

Pawn
The pawn is the simplest piece. It can only move one space forwards, but it may capture diagonally. Pawns may not capture en passant.

Lesser Rook
The Lesser Rook upgrades from the Pawn, and costs 1 point. It can move one space in orthogonal directions.

Lesser Bishop
The Lesser Bishop upgrades from the Pawn, and costs 1 point. It can move one space along the diagonal axes.

Swapper
The Swapper upgrades from the Pawn, and costs 1 point. It doesn't have a normal movement rule; instead, this piece moves by switching places with one of your own pieces.

Rook
The Rook upgrades from the Lesser Rook, and costs 2 points. It can move any number of spaces in the orthogonal directions, and may not jump over pieces.

Bishop
The Bishop upgrades from the Lesser Bishop, and costs 2 points. It can move any number of spaces along the diagonal axes, and may not jump over pieces.

Lesser King
The Lesser King upgrades from either the Lesser Rook or the Lesser Bishop, and costs 2 points. It may move one space in any direction.

Cannon
The Cannon upgrades from the Rook, and costs 3 points. It may move any number of spaces in horizontal directions, and may also jump over one piece in its movement.

Protector
The Protector upgrades from the Rook or the Lesser King, and costs 3 points. The Protector may only move horizontally, but the first time an opponent would attempt to capture this piece, it is not captured; the opponent's piece is not moved and the Protector remains in its place as well.

Pincer
The Pincer upgrades from the Bishop or the Lesser King, and costs 3 points. It moves just like a Knight in normal chess would, but along a diagonal. The Pincer may jump over pieces.

Zigzag
The Zigzag upgrades from the Bishop, and costs 3 points. It can move any number of spaces, but must alternate moving along the left diagonal and right diagonal.

Supernaturalist
The Supernaturalist upgrades from the Swapper, and costs 2 points. It can swap places with any piece on the board within one square of it (ie. the area shown in the diagram), and may not swap places with either King.

Necromancer
The Necromancer upgrades from the Swapper, and costs 2 points. The Necromancer can swap places with any piece that you have captured, removing this piece from the board and placing that captured piece in the place where this piece was.

King
The King is one of your starting pieces. It may move one space in any direction. If your King is captured or checkmated, you lose the game.

Clarification: A capture occurs when you move a piece to a space occupied by your opponent's piece, capturing it and earning you 2 points. The swapper family cannot capture.
Clarification: For the Pincer's movement, the squares labeled "Pi" are the only eight squares that the piece can move to.
Clarification: For Cannon, it can move in any orthogonal direction, and can jump over one piece (but does not have to).
Clarification: You may only upgrade one piece per turn, and you may only perform one upgrade per turn (so you can't upgrade multiple levels in a turn).
