Main Match 5: Crime City

Summary:

Players will take on the roles of characters with various public abilities and private goals based on a hidden role. Then, during a chaotic week where all players can influence each character, players will attempt to achieve their own goal. The first player to achieve their goal will come out on top!

Gameplay:

In this game, players will take on characters and hidden roles that direct their actions and goals. The character you select will provide you an additional character-based action as well as your starting location, while your hidden role will determine what your goal is.

Before the game begins, players will create a drafting order from both the list of characters and the list of hidden roles. The list of character descriptions can be found in #characters and the list of hidden roles can be found in #hidden-roles. In addition to creating these numbered lists, players should bid a number of garnets to secure themselves their most desired choices. This bid is shared for gaining priority in both lists. The players who bid the most garnets will get first selection. Any players who bid the same number of garnets as each other or bid 0 garnets will have their tie broken by their final placement in the previous Main Match.

The characters and hidden roles that players select will not be revealed publicly. There will be 8 characters used in the game, regardless of how the players draft. The three characters who are not selected in the draft will be used in the game, but will not have a hidden role associated with them.

This game will take place over a maximum of 6 rounds, but may end sooner if the hidden goals are completed before then. When a hidden goal is completed, it is privately announced to that player. There is no public indicator of which goals have been completed or how many have been completed.

Each round, players will submit two actions that they would like to have processed.

The game will be played on a city board with four locations in four quadrants, as shown in the image below.

These are the following actions every player has access to. It is mandatory to select two of the following actions, however you can only select 1 movement action at most. If it is not possible to select a non-movement action, then you must only select a single move action.

Move Horizontally

Move Vertically

Converse with [character] at current location

Use character action

Use friendship action

Conversing and character actions occur before movement.

If one of the two movement actions is picked, they will move that character accordingly. However, if an even number of the same type of movement action is played on a character, they will not move in that direction. If both a horizontal and vertical movement action are played on a character in an odd number, then that character will move diagonally instead. A character action or friendship action that includes a movement is not considered a movement action.

Conversing with a character will increase the friendship counter with that character. A pair of characters who have at least 2 friendship points with each other will be able to use each other’s character actions as a friendship action. Additionally, networks of friendships can be formed - any chain of characters with 2 friendship points along the way can use any member of that chain’s action. Using a friendship action involves using your own character to make the action, rather than the friend character. A friendship action cannot be activated on the same turn on which it would achieve 2 friendship points. Friendship points are public to all players.

Actions can be played on any character as long as you are able to. You may not use the same type of action on the same character two rounds in a row. Both movement actions are considered to be of the same type. Using a character’s action means choosing that character, even if the effect target is someone else. Character actions are tracked separately from friendship actions, and friendship actions are tracked separately for each different friend. This means that you can use friendship actions consecutively as long as the friend is different each time.

At any submission, you can spend 3 garnets to increase the friendship points between any two characters at any locations by 1. This is in addition to your main actions, and can be done multiple times in one submission.

Results:

If there is one player who has not completed their goal by the end of the game, then they will be EC and the player who completed their goal first will have a ToL. If either two or three players were to complete their goal first simultaneously, all of them will receive ToLs. If four players complete their goal first simultaneously, then all ToLs are voided.

If there are two or three players who have not completed their goal by the end of the game, then the player who has completed their goal first will decide an EC from among them. If there is a tie among winners, then they must decide unanimously.

If there are either four or five players who have not completed their goal by the end of the game, then all criminals in Crime City will turn themselves in to the authorities. The player with the lowest garnet count will be the EC. If two or more players are tied for lowest, then all remaining players will select an EC unanimously.

If you have completed your goal first, you will obtain 15 garnets. If you complete your goal second, you will obtain 10 garnets. If you complete your goal third, you will obtain 7 garnets. If you complete your goal fourth, you will obtain 4 garnets. If there is a tie for a position, the number of garnets obtained is reduced by 2. For example, if 2 players tie for first, then they will both earn 13 garnets and the next player to complete a goal will obtain 7 garnets. Garnets are awarded at the end of the game rather than when you complete your goal.

The Armed Guard

Starts in the Bank. Can not be the Bank Robber.

Can move another character in this location diagonally.

The Store Clerk

Starts in Main Street.

Can have a conversation with a character at any location to increase friendship points.

The Detective

Starts in Main Street. Can not be the Mob Boss.

Can target one character in any location to investigate and determine their hidden role.

The Governor

Starts in the Mansion. Can not be the Hitman.

Warning: This character is able to die. Can send any one character from the current location to any other location. This is processed before all movement actions. If this character is dead, friends of this character can not use this action.

The Governor’s Daughter

Starts in the Mansion. Can not be the Hitman.

Can summon The Governor to the current location. This is processed after all other movement actions. If The Governor is already dead, then summon The Store Clerk to the current location instead.

Hidden Roles:

The Bank Robber

Needs to spend at least two turns at the Bank while both The Armed Guard and The Policeman are not there.

The Hitman

Needs to spend one turn with the Governor while nobody else is in the location. The Governor dies, and is removed from the game after this is completed.

The Pickpocket

Needs to accumulate pickpocketed items by spending turns at locations with other characters. After stealing from 4 unique characters, they need to go to Main Street. If they are already at Main Street, the goal completes instantly.

The Fraud

Needs to spend a turn at the Town Hall while The Secretary is not there. Then, needs to spend a turn at the Town Hall while the Secretary is there.

The Mob Boss

Needs to make a submission in which they indicate what hidden role every character has. This player may attempt once every round, but must have a perfect answer to succeed.

Example Submission:

After the draft, 6 rounds will take place in the following fashion. Let's say that Andy is playing the Detective and is the Pickpocket. Grunkle is playing the Banker and is the Mob Boss.

Each round, it is mandatory to select two actions if possible. For Andy's first round, they would like to make the Secretary move vertically and use their character action to investigate the store clerk. Grunkle has submitted to move the Governor horizontally and use the character action to move diagonally (Note that this is possible because it is specified that movements within character actions do not violate the two movement actions rule).

At the end of this round, the Secretary would move from their starting place in Town Hall down to Main Street. The Governor would leave the Mansion to go to Town Hall, and Grunkle's character the Banker would move from the Bank to Town Hall. Andy will also be informed that the Store Clerk does not have a hidden role.

Now, during the next round recall that you cannot target any of the same characters with same action types as last round. This means that Andy cannot use a movement action on the Secretary, nor can they use their Detective character action. They can do any other actions. Similarly, Grunkle cannot use a movement action on the Armed Guard or their character ability of the Banker. Next round these will all be available again.

Let's assume that Andy and Grunkle are both going to try to bring the Detective to Town Hall but have not communicated with each other. They might both submit a vertical movement for the Detective. This causes a conflict in the sense that the Detective would move vertically twice, thus still ending up back in Main Street.

At some point in the game, Grunkle has reached a friendship level of 2 between his character the Banker and the Detective. Grunkle now has access to the friendship action of the Detective. Grunkle, however, did not realize that Andy is the detective. In doing this, Andy has access to the Banker's friendship action. Andy can now cause themselves to move diagonally with the Banker's action

Addendum: Once 4 players have completed their goal, the game will end immediately since there is no benefit for the fifth player finishing their goal

Clarification: When text says 'spend a turn', this refers to ending your turn in the specified conditions

Clarification: If there are multiple players to simultaneously complete their goal as the last players to complete, then it is treated as equivalent if they did not complete their goals and the same tiebreak would be used

Clarification: During the draft, hidden roles are priority over characters in cases where there would be a conflict with the combination of the two

Clarification: With the text that specifies spending a turn or ending a turn, this begins after the first actions are submitted. In other words, the end of the drafting round would not count towards completing any of the hidden goals

Clarification: Per the text that says "The character you select will provide you an additional character-based action," this means that only you have access to that character's action until other players form a friendship with your character. You may only access your own characters action. Friendship actions, however, separately allow you to use the actions of other characters once you have reached a level 2 friendship with them

Clarification: The only information that is public which will be revealed each round is the map of where every character is and friendship point totals. At the end of the game, the final results will show what order everyone completed their goal and thus who receives ToLs or EC status and who receives garnets

Clarification: Similar to how you may only use your own character action, you may only use friendship actions if they are networked with your own character

Addendum: Since the Governor and the Governor's Daughter abilities can cause conflict within themselves when used by friends, if two of the same of these actions are played at the same time then they will cancel themselves out unless both players were causing the same movement to occur
