DM9: ENTER THE GRUNGEON

In this game, three players will enter a labyrinth in an attempt to defeat the Grunkletaur and make it out alive.

Before the start of the Death Match, players will see the full 15x15 maze for 3 minutes. During these 3 minutes, they must attempt to memorize the path of the maze that they see, along with the location of crucial items and spikes.

During the entire duration of this Death Match, note-taking is not allowed.

After the 3 minutes have passed, the maze will be deleted. The second DMO, @Wimpzilla, will then choose which corner they wish to start from. Then, the first DMO, @Pumbledore, will choose which corner they wish to start from. Finally, the EC, @Reds, will choose which corner they wish to start from. Two players cannot be in the same corner.

After starting locations are chosen, the Death Match officially begins. This Death Match takes place in turns.

Each turn is 30 seconds. At the start of a turn, you are given an update on your HP, inventory, actions that were taken in your previous room, and their current surroundings (other players in the same room and the walls). You start with 20 HP and nothing in your inventory.

During a turn, you can queue each of the below actions up to one time:

Attack. You can choose to attack with a weapon you own. This will deal damage to all other players and enemies in the current room.

Use. You can choose to use an item you own. There are many different items with unique effects.

Move. You can move one space up, down, left, or right. If you try to move into a wall, you will fail at your movement. You can choose not to move.

At the end of the 30 seconds, all queued actions will be processed. Attacks are processed first, then uses, then moves. You will know your own actions for the turn as well as the actions of any other players that were in the same room as you.

If you move into a room with an item or weapon, you will automatically pick it up. If multiple players enter the same room at the same time, one of them will randomly pick up the item(s)/weapon(s).

Messages on previous turns and submissions will automatically be deleted to make sure players rely on their memory.

If you are in the room when a player's HP is brought down to zero, you take all their items in their inventory. If multiple players are in the room, then they share the items evenly and randomly.

Players that have their HP reach zero are considered dead and are eliminated. They will be unable to do anything and will no longer participate in the Death Match. It will be publicly announced when a player has died.

The primary objective of the Death Match is to defeat the Grunkletaur which is found in the center room of the maze (K11). The Grunkletaur has 14 HP and the player who defeats the Grunkletaur by landing the final blow is rewarded with a Token of Grunkle. If multiple players land the final blow together, the player who dealt more damage on the final blow claims the Token of Grunkle. If this is a tie, then all tied players are rewarded with a Token of Grunkle.

The player who escapes the Grungeon with the Token of Grunkle wins the Death Match. The other two participants are eliminated from god candidacy.

WEAPONS

There are three types of weapons in Enter the Grungeon: axes, swords, and lances. These form a weapon triangle.

You cannot deal damage or attack without a weapon.

Axes are strong against lances.

Lances are strong against swords.

Swords are strong against axes.

If two players use different types of weapons, then the player who has the weapon advantage deals the weapon's base damage + 1, while the player who has the weapon disadvantage deals the weapon's base damage - 2.

The Grunkletaur is considered to have no weapon and therefore takes normal damage from all weapons.

There is one of each of the below weapons in the Grungeon:

:iron_axe: Iron Axe: An axe that has a base damage of 3.

:steel_axe: Steel Axe: An axe that has a base damage of 5.

:diamond_axe: Diamond Axe: An axe that has a base damage of 7.

:iron_sword: Iron Sword: A sword that has a base damage of 3.

:steel_sword: Steel Sword: A sword that has a base damage of 5.

:diamond_sword: Diamond Sword: A sword that has a base damage of 7.

:iron_lance: Iron Lance: A lance that has a base damage of 3.

:steel_lance: Steel Lance: A lance that has a base damage of 5.

:diamond_lance: Diamond Lance: A lance that has a base damage of 7.

Example 1:

Amy and Ben are in the same room. Amy attacks with an Iron Axe and Ben attacks with a Diamond Lance. Since Lances are weak against Axes, Ben will only deal 7-2=5 damage to Amy. Since Axes are strong against Lances, Amy will deal 3+1=4 damage to Ben.

Example 2:

Amy, Ben, and Cassie are in the same room. Amy attacks with a Steel Axe, Ben attacks with an Iron Axe, and Cassie attacks with a Steel Sword.

Since Axes are weak against Swords but neutral against other Axes, Amy deals 5 damage to Ben and 5-2=3 damage to Cassie.

The same is true for Ben, so Ben deals 3 damage to Amy and 3-2=1 damage to Cassie.

Since Swords are strong against Axes, Cassie deals 5+1=6 damage to both Amy and Ben.

ITEMS

There are a few different items you may encounter in the Grungeon. Here is the full list of items available:

🍡 Potion β€” Use to heal 7 HP. There are 4 Potions total in the Grungeon. You cannot have more HP than your max HP, which starts at 20.

🍢 HP Up β€” Use to heal 2 HP and also gain 2 max HP. There are 4 HP Ups total in the Grungeon.

πŸ“‘ Broken Teleporter β€” Use to teleport to a random room in the maze. You will be told your new coordinates. There are 2 Broken Teleporters in the Grungeon.

SPIKES

Some rooms in the Grungeon will have πŸ“Œ spikes. Entering these rooms will cause you to lose 2 HP.

If you die to spikes, your items will remain on the floor of the room you died in, for anybody to pick up.

GRUNKLETAUR

The Grunkletaur will idle until a player is in its room. Then, it will randomly decide between 2 different actions:

Idle β€” The Grunkletaur will do nothing.

Attack β€” The Grunkletaur will attack to do 5 base damage.

The Grunkletaur will have a 70% chance to attack and a 30% chance to idle.

RESULTS

You win Enter the Grungeon by being the first person to escape the maze with a Token of Grunkle.

If two players ecape the maze with a Token of Grunkle at the same exact turn, then DMO 2 > DMO 1 > EC wins.

If you try to exit the Grungeon without a Token of Grunkle, the game will not let you.

TIMING

The pre-game phase will last 3 minutes. Each player will then each have 40 seconds to choose a corner. Players have 30 seconds per turn to queue their actions.

Clarification: For this game, your orientation doesn't change nor matter. That is, cardinal direction and relative direction are identical (up is always north, left is always west). Just imagine that your player character is always looking north.

Clarification: You may publicly talk in #dm9-game-room, but cannot use pair chats during the duration of the DM.

Clarification: You cannot attack without a weapon.
