In this Match, the two players will be presented with a 4x4 grid of numbers, as well as four target numbers. Each of the four basic arithmetical operations (addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication) must be applied to a pair of diagonally adjacent numbers in order to reach each of the four target numbers. However, you may need to rotate either the outer or inner ring of numbers, or both, in order to reach the target!

A simple example is provided below:

In this image, the outer ring is outlined is blue, and the inner ring is outlined in yellow.

In order to solve the puzzle, the inner ring is rotated counterclockwise once, and then four pairs of diagonally-adjacent numbers are made in order to create the four target numbers.

Specific Puzzle Rules

The inner and outer ring may both be rotated, although it may not be necessary to rotate either ring. Each ring may only be rotated a maximum of two times in each direction, however. A number may only be used in one expression, and may not be used multiple times, and the two numbers must be directly, diagonally adjacent. Only addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division is permitted. The solver may select which number is before and which is after the operand, if relevant.

Death Match Mechanics

There are nine rounds prepared, as well as a tiebreaking final puzzle. When each puzzle is sent, it will begin a timer for 5 minutes. Any player may propose a solution at any point. A proposed solution must include the rotation(s) used, if any, as well as which four pairs of numbers form the solution.

If a player successfully solves a puzzle, they will score 1 point. If either 5 minutes elapse, or both players make two unsuccessful solve attempts, the puzzle will be retired.

Victory

Once a player wins 5 points, they will be declared the winner of the Death Match, and will advance to Round 7. Alternatively, if all nine rounds are completed, the player with more points will win the Match. If the players are tied at the end of nine rounds, then the Final Puzzle will be presented. This puzzle has no time limit, nor turns. Instead, any player may buzz in if they believe they have a solution. If a player buzzes in, they will have 30 seconds to send in their solution. If it is valid, they will win the Match. If it is not, they will forfeit the Match.

Communication

Safe players are free to discuss this Death Match with the Death Match participants, up to the commencement of the live match, including creating and attempting practice puzzles. At that point, the Death Match Participants ought to be treated as being totally incommunicado.

Stakes

The winner of this Death Match will earn all of their opponents Garnets, as well as the final position in Round 7, while the loser will be the last of our first half of casualties. Don't let your head get in a spin, contestants!
